President's Message, September 2007

Emergency Plan
Your PMKCA officers have been working on an emergency plan under the leadership of Mary Souza for our community. These plans are essential for the safety and wellbeing of those who live within our boundaries. Our association has distributed and also made available a form for each household to fill out so that we will know where our strengths and weaknesses are. Besides closed roads, no water and electricity, it is important that we know where our elderly and those with special needs are. We have so many bridges that may cause a problem should they go out. This may sound trifle but who knows when and where we will have nature work against us. The form is made available on our website at www.pmkca.org or ask any board member for a copy. It may be your life that is in danger.

Hamakua Alive!
Another real exciting event planned by the association is to be a part of Hamakua Alive! to be held October 27 on the grounds of the Pa'auilo School. This affair will feature produce and homegrown chefs from Hamakua. The Pa'auilo School will be a part of this occasion with their annual Blue and White Celebration. Sounds like fun, and we look forward to seeing all of you there.

Car Decal
Our Association Logo is available for sale by calling any of our board members who will be willing to see that your request is met The logo was professionally done and it is a real nice decal that can be placed on your windshield to help identify our cars within our neighborhood. The cost is $3.00 for one and $5.00 for two.

Road Cleanup
We will be having another road cleanup in November--our last good deed of the year, and we welcome anyone who wishes to help keep our community clean. It always makes me sad to see all the cans, bottles and rubbish on the side of the roads. Why does anyone have to throw their rubbish out on the highway when they can take it home to dispose of it? A TIP--have a plastic bag available for your trash, a grocery sack makes a good container. You may call Jaime Reno at 776-9826 or any board member.

By-Pass Road
The Department of Public Works is still working on the Kalopa By-Pass Road which is 4,000 feet in length. The Hawaii County Council, through Council member Dominic Yagong appropriated $1 million of the $3.4 million in the current budget. Tentative plans call for the road design to be completed in January 2008 with the construction occurring in the second quarter of 2008. We are still keeping on top of this project and it is going well. The design had to be redone and this caused the delay.

I appreciate all who serve our community.
