President`s Message

Bridge Closure
We have been informed by the Hawaii Department of Public Works that work on the Waikaalulu bridge at the bottom of Ho`okahua Road and Kaapahu Road will begin on October 6 and be closed for 30 days. A notice will be in the Hawaii Tribune Herald announcing the closure. Those who live on Kaapahu and Kulakahiko Road that need to exit the mountain will have to choose another route. The Department of Public Works is looking at two other bridges that need attention and you will be informed when it happens.

Hamakua Alive!
Our association is excited about Hamakua Alive! a project to bring together those who produce and those who cook to help us become aware of these products and those who produce them. We will have a booth that will serve an eatable dish. We will have some baked goods for sale and are asking for donations from you. You may call Dolores Ramos at 776-1666. We are adding another product to the festivities by sharing seeds, cuttings and seedlings. This plant exchange is chaired by Diana Nui and co-chaired by Carla Pinahs. Please call Diana at 775-8228 if you have plants, cuttings, or seedlings to exchange. Your help will be welcomed.

Survey of Community Members
As a result of the survey taken at our potluck in July, several interest groups have been formed and the members communicate via email. The most active group is the gardening group. They swap info about what grows well, or doesn't, and may even visit each other's gardens to share info. Other groups are the walking group, the native plant group, the pond group and those who want to learn more about our ahupua`a. If you would like to be added to a group, please email Dianne at deardianne@msn.com.

Water Meeting
I attended a public meeting in Honokaa with the Department of Water Supply on September 10, 2008 at the Honokaa School Cafeteria. There is a moratorium on county water meters in many areas in Hamakua and they repeated that anyone building in these areas will have to be on catchment.
