President`s Message

This month I have the pleasure to share our news letter with Linda Gallano, Chairman of the Kalopa State Park Sign Project. (See Below) The committee worked long and hard and I am proud of their achievement. I just have a couple of notes.

Hamakua Alive!
The affair was such a success. Working together made such a difference for the Pa`auilo School's Blue and White, thank you Jim Reddekopp who brought to the school the cooks, the gardeners the artists and all who enjoy an outing together. Kudos to Jasmine Bailado for keeping things in order.

Year 2009
Our next business meeting will be in January, a date will be announced in our next news letter. Election of officers will be on the agenda and it would be great if all within our borders would attend and become a voice in our community.

By Pass Road
The County has not given up with getting us a bypass road off Kaapahu Rd. They are working on an offer and we pray that all will be well.

Sand Gulch
It has been reported that a large bolder fell onto the sand gulch road and it could have caused a serious accident.

Much Aloha.

Kalopa Park Sign Project

We are happy to report that the ad hoc committee formed to update the signage at Kalopa State Park has completed its work. This sign-off statement hardly captures the enthusiasm, hard work and humor of our group. What started off as a suggestion from a community member accompanied by a generous donation from Lloyd and Julia Soehren progressed through our PMKCA president, Dolores, forming an ad hoc committee to look into the task.

The core group met first in May to survey the area and to determine which signs needed replacing, which trees and plants no longer existed and how much material would be necessary. Uncle Quentin Tomich led us through the initial step. We surveyed the entry road and began making signs. The sign makers were led by Dave DeEsch and Francis Higgins. They routed, and painted the new signs. Then the labor crew took over and put the signs together. Next and final step was pounding them into the ground. The entry way looked so nice that we moved on to the Dry land Forest area and the Polynesian Garden and repeated the process.

Mahalo again to our awesome crew: Dave DeEsch, Francis Higgins, Diana Nui, Terry and Rich Mortenson, Michael Gibson, Patty 'shoeless' Kelly, Carla Pinahs and Eddie Gallano. A special mahalo to the park staff, Patrick & Bo for their kokua and encouragement. And another mahalo to our PMKCA president, Dolores Ramos for her continued leadership and warm encouragement.

Check out the next issue of the Hamakua Times for photos of all the hard workers!
