President`s Message

A number of our members have been busy working on the Kalopa State Park project under the leadership of Linda Gallano. I spent one morning at the park to help with the painting of the signs that will be placed near the native plants and trees. Dave DeEsch prepared the lumber that Jim Millar donated, by carving the names of the trees and plants. Dave, Linda, Francis Higgins, Diana Nui, and I spent some time putting on the first coat of paint. Mr. Quentin Tomich came to join us and to share some knowledge of the plants and the park. With the first coat done Francis volunteered to take the signs home to put on the final coat. The committee is only half way done so they will continue to work on the second half of the signs. Lloyd Soehren donated $250 to help with this project--thank you Lloyd and Julia. If you have not visited the park, you may want to take some time to enjoy the beauty and serenity that is a part of our community.

Our officers are working on an emergency plan for our community and need your input. We have concerns about communication, bridges out, and fallen trees that might block the roads. You will also need to have a supply of water, food and medication, etc. Mary Souza, our chairman, has put a plan together to present to the Civil Defense for their input and approval. Steve Vujnovich has volunteered to serve on this committee and has asked a friend to do a presentation on the subject at our potluck meeting in late July. If you haven't already completed an Emergency Preparedness Survey, please click on our association link at www.pmkca.org print the survey then mail to the address on the form. Also, there is still time to sign up for the Community Emergency Response Team training to be held in Honoka`a starting on June 7. See the attached flier.

Beside the condition of the roads, water is a concern. The Department of Water Supply has informed the public that most of the properties sold in our area will not be able to hook on to the County water line and that all new home owners will have to install a water tank. If anyone wants to know if their property is not able to tap on to the present line you can call the Department of Water supply or the Building Department.

I wrote a letter with the help of Dianne Higgins to the Department of Public Works about the condition of some of the roads in our community. I asked if some of our roads are on the list to be repaired in 2008. I inquired about the road (parking area) in the front of the Pa`auilo Store and the Post Office. After getting in touch with Kamehameha Schools, County Road Department and the State Road Department each claiming no responsibility I asked the State Road Department to check the tax key of the Paauilo Store and was informed that the State owns one third of the property fronting Paaulio Store and two thirds to Kamehameha Schools. I will follow up on this matter.

The board will meet again on June 10, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Vanilla Company. This is a special meeting to make plans for our annual Picnic to be held at the Kalopa State Park at 11:00 a.m. on July 26. We will have a guest speaker at our picnic that will share his knowledge on emergencies. It will be bingo time and prizes are welcomed. You will be able to renew you membership-- please plan to attend.
