Semi Annual Pot Luck Meeting July 26, 2008 at the Kalopa State Park
The Board of Directors held a special meeting on June 10, 2008 to coordinate our annual pot luck meeting that will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Bring your favorite dish and the association will provide drinks and dinnerware. If you have a prize that can be used for our bingo game, bring that too! Mark it with your name so we know who to thank. Jo Kim suggested that we all bring a canned good or the like to share with the Food Bank. It was such a good idea we agreed that each person is asked to bring a canned good for the FOOD BANK.
Those who wish to help with our native plant plot will meet at the Kalopa State Park at 9:00 am with your garden tools ready to work in the garden at the far end of the park. Linda Gallano and her helpers put up the new signs that they printed and painted. Linda--what a great job. Thank you to all who worked so hard to complete this project. They are taking on another part of the Park to replace signs on the Nature Trail. Anyone who wants to help, please get in touch with Linda at 775-7494. They have a great team.
Steve Vujnovich was able to make arrangements to have instructor Russell Tanji share his knowledge of Homeland Security at our potluck. Mr. Tanji will be our guest speaker. This is such a privilege for us to have this information and I am sure this will be time well spent. Thank you Steve.
Mary Souza, our Emergency Preparedness Chairperson, has put together a draft plan for our community that will be shared with all when it is certified. Mary has put a number of hours into this project and is interested in the resources available within the boundaries. Communication is at the top of the list and she would like to know who has a ham radio or satellite telephone. You may call her at 775-1654. Anyone who would like to serve on this committee is welcomed. Mary has arranged for a short film to be shown at our potluck related to the CERT training (see below).
Dianne Higgins has put together a survey, based on input from community members, which will be distributed at the potluck. The purpose of the survey is to gather information on members' interests and put people in touch with others that have similar interests. It will also ask if you are willing to serve on a committee or help out a neighbor in need.
Thank you Rob Frost!
When we all worked on the weed whacking on the no-name road back in March, Rob was kind enough to spray the roadside to help keep the weeds from growing back so quickly. We appreciate Rob's help and also his help with the Coqui Frog Committee. Rob will be stepping down from the frog committee. Thanks again, Rob.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
The North Hawaii Education Research Center in Honokaa in conjunction with the Hawai`i Fire Department and the County Civil Defense offered an 8 hour CERT class for four Saturdays in June. Five of our association members are attending the training-- Paul Donoho, Dave Jackson, Carl Pinahs, Mary Souza and me. There are also some members from our neighboring communities.
Jaime Reno had a concern that the emergency ambulance took more time to arrive at the home of the person having a problem because the driver was not familiar with the area. This is a sensitive subject because it concerns our lives. We live in such a rural area and do not have all the services the city has to offer.
Hamakua Alive!
This year this affair will be held on October 25, 2008 at the Pa`auilo School. Our Association will have a booth. Anyone who wants to help with this project please contact Dolores Ramos at 776-1666. Those who would like to have a booth of their, own call Jim Reddekopp at 776-1771.
Constitution and By Laws
A change will be presented to our members for a vote of approval. We would like your participation.
We look forward to seeing all of our neighbors at the Pot Luck on the 26th of July with a canned good for the Food Bank to share a pleasant time at the park.
The regular board meeting will be held July 8, 2008 at the Vanilla Company at 7 pm.
