President`s Message
We all survived Thanksgiving with family and friends and that was great being together to express our thanks for the many blessings we received throughout the year... Then Christmas came upon us with beautiful lights and decorations. We had to have time for shopping, baking and bringing good cheer to family and friends. I love the beautiful decorations and lights that warm the heart. Thank you to all who take the time to put up such wonderful displays for everyone to enjoy. My neighbor, the Gaspars, have for several years put up a beautiful scene up in their yard. Thank you for doing such a good job that brightens our neighborhood.
The Christmas trees are now taken down and the gifts put away and we look forward to a new year. As we celebrated Christmas, I hope we remembered the Christ Child Jesus who came to earth and was an example of true love and commitment and we, too, can work toward acquiring these virtues. It is now time for reflection on the past so we can go forward with enthusiasm to work toward the goals we set for ourselves.
The CERT team under the direction of Carl Pinahs met again on the 3” of December at NHERC. We worked on lD’s for each of the team members and guidelines that will help all of us. It sure is nice to be informed as to our responsibilities and Carl is good at that. Thank you to all who take the time to be an active participant working together and sharing ideas.
A landmark in Pa’auilo has come down and we miss it. It was a building that needed much repair, but it was more than just a building to many of our people who were born and raised in this community and l am sure that many have fond memories of the Saito and Eugenio families that gave so much time and aloha to all of their customers. It is not all lost because they are now in the building next to the Post Office. Kamehameha Schools plans to rebuild at the same site in the future. If that happens, it would be in their favor to show our people that they matter and all who pass by will see a building dedicated to the Kamehameha Schools for our community and all who will stop by to pick up a bento, a drink or dinner.
Every plantation town had a country store. Very few exist today but Pa’auilo Store is still in operation. When the new highway was completed, it cut off all but the Pa’auilo Store which became a landmark on the Hamakua Coast. Thanks to the Saitos and the Eugenios who operated the store with aloha for the people of Pa’auilo. Today Mark and his brother are the third generation to keep the Pa’auilo Store up and running.
Our semiannual meeting will be held at the Pa`auilo School on Tuesday January 31, 2012 at 7:00 pm. We will have John Lindelow and Dave DeEsch who will do a presentation on Reforestation, a USDA Program. Ray Broggini will help us get excited about doing our own gardening and those foods that are best to grow. Councilman Dominic Yagong will also be with us that evening and will bring us up to date with projects that concern our community. I am grateful to these presenters for their time and energy.
As we welcome in the New Year, may we remember to look for the good in our families, our community and our country. May all of you have a happy New Year filled with the good things of life. Take care of your health and finances and be happy.
See you all at the January 31st meeting...
