Pa'auilo Mauka Kalopa Community Association August 2011 Newsletter
President`s Message
Our community has been in count-down mode for weeks now, waiting to hear when the Bypass Road will officially open. We have all been anxious to use the new road but there have been many loose ends to tie up. Well, THE WAIT IS OVER!!! The Bypass Road will officially open on Saturday JULY, 30, 2011 at 9:00 AM. The location will be somewhere on the new road - not the top and not the bottom but probably somewhere near the middle of the road. Mayor Kenoi and Councilman Yagong will be there and we invite all who wish to be a part of this celebration to join us. If any of you wish to share a morsel or two, such as cookies etc, that will be great.
This is so exciting, many of those that depend on the Sand Gulch will be able to have a way out of the mountain should the gulch be blocked with rocks or debris. We wish to thank all who worked on this project which has been in the making for 20 years. An invitation will be extended to the past presidents so that they too can share in this celebration.
We held our last board meeting at the Vanilla Mill on Tuesday July 12, 2011. Mac Asato from the Hamakua Road Department was asked to join us but at the last minute was unable to be with us. We will ask him to share some time with us later. Thanks Mac. We heard from our Secretary, Diana Nui, Treasurer and Membership chair Joan Dempster, and Duncan Dempster our Communication chairman who handles all of the e-mail sent out to our members. Duncan stated that some members have suggested that we have some sort of a community communication vehicle, such as an electronic message board, that would allow our members to post short term items of interest, such as lost or found, missing or recovered pets, or a garden vegetable exchange, etc. What a great idea! Duncan will be working on this project with our webmaster, John Lindelow, and when they get this set up in the near future we will let you know via e-mail.
We heard from Carl Pinahs who gave us a report of the number of members that are enrolled in the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training class. This training is being held at the NHERC in Honokaa each Saturday in July, and currently, some 15 of our community members are undergoing the training. This is such a plus for our community because we will have a number of people trained to help in an emergency. Thank you to all who are working to be certified and thank you Carl for organizing this workshop.
We heard from Linda Gallano who heads the Oral History Program. There is still much to be done and we continue work on this important project. Speaking of projects, Linda also heads our Canoe Garden project up at Kalopa State Park. We are proud to say it is looking good and the plants are thriving. Take a look next time you’re up there.
Our Road Chairman is Gary DeRego and he gave us an update of the Bypass Road. The road is not turned over to the County because of three items on the inspection list failed and he was asked to help to bring it up to standard.
It is PICNIC TIME on the mountain and the PMKCA Annual Picnic will be held at the Kalopa State Park on Saturday August 6. 2011 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is a Pot Luck affair that will give you an opportunity to share one of your favorite dishes. We will begin with our business meeting and our special guest speaker. Then we will have our lunch and last of all is bingo time. Many of our members enjoy playing bingo which is the highlight of the afternoon. We ask that you bring a prize or two for our game.
For the members who have not been to our picnic, maybe you can join us and have a fun time and get to know your neighbors and maybe decide to be a member for $15 per year. Also, members who would like to bring their annual dues payment up to date are encouraged to do so. To those who live within our boundaries and have not joined the association, we invite you to experience our Picnic in the Park.
See you on the 6th of August in the Park.
