Pa'auilo Mauka Kalopa Community Association
August 2007 Newsletter

President's Message
Our annual picnic at Kalopa Park was a success-- the weather was great, the food was super; the fellowship proved to be something we all need to become a community who cares what happens to each of our neighbors. The prizes donated by our local community businesses helped to make our bingo game a lot of fun. Dominic Yagong told us that the second phase of the Sand Gulch Project will start soon. I know that many of our people are also anxious to hear if the by-pass road will happen. Well, it is and Dominic informed us that the money is in place and the plans had to be redone and will be ready by the end of the year, so construction will begin in 2008.

Our committee chairmen gave their reports and we thank them for their dedication. I once read that if I noticed a problem I could decide to a part of the problem by doing nothing or part of the solution by doing something about it. We could all be part of the solution by volunteering with constructive suggestions and offering to serve on various committees. Our community could benefit from your knowledge and expertise.

Mary Souza, our emergency chair, worked on a survey that was distributed at the picnic for all to fill in the information that will be helpful in an emergency. If you do not have this form, you may get it from our website at www.pmka.org or get in touch with any of the officers or board members to acquire this form. We will be working with the civil defense so that we will have a certified plan.

I would like to share a little hint on a basic home storage plan. Build a small supply of food that is part of your normal daily diet. One way to do this is to purchase a few extra items each week to build a one week supply until it is sufficient for three months. These items should be rotated regularly to avoid spoilage. Store drinking water for circumstances in which the water supply may be polluted or disrupted. Keep water containers away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Establish a financial reserve by saving a little money each week and gradually increase it to a reasonable amount. You do not have to have it done in a week, just start to work on your long term plan. "Good Luck."

The question of how many homes are in our associations' boundary and how are the roads? Well Dianne Higgins and I took a trip around our community counting roof tops and accessing the condition of the roads, etc. See the list below that shows how many homes are on each street or road. When we got through, we were happy to be a part of this mountain. We love it here and are working to keep it safe and a place we are proud to call home.

New Webpage for our Community Association!

We now have a webpage devoted to our association. You can check out upcoming events, learn about emergency preparedness, sign-up to receive this e-newsletter (if you don't already receive a copy), read the past newsletters, see the listing of the officers and committee chairs and participate in the community forum. Soon you will be able to join the PMKCA by going online, printing out the application and sending your membership dues and application to our post office box. Here is the link: http://pmkca.org.

When you click on the link, you will be able to see our new logo, the ohia blossom with PMKCA in an oval shape. Logos are available for association members. See costs in the section on Membership.

Thanks go out to John Lindelow who developed this web-based information system for our community.

Membership Update

There are two main times during the year when membership dues are collected. Folks can join for the first time, or renew either during our annual meeting held in January or at the potluck meeting held in July.

If you didn't renew your membership or can't recall when you paid last, just send an email to me (Dianne Higgins) at deardianne@msn.com and I'll let you know your status.

You can print the membership form attached and mail with your dues to our post office box. The dues are now $15 for a year-which is still a bargain. We also welcome donations and would like to thank those that donated recently.

Once you join, you can also purchase our new car decal which is a vinyl cling decal that attaches to the inside window of the passenger side of the car. This decal will identify you or a family member as a member of our community association. Thanks to Jim Reddekopp for getting this cool design for us!

The cost of the decals is as follows:
  • 1 for $3
  • 2 for $5
  • 3 for $8
  • 4 for $10
Click here to join and/or buy decals.
