Sad News
We're so sorry to report that the husband of our president Eugene Ramos passed away on March 24 after a sudden illness. Eugene was the chairman of our Water, Health, and Utilities Committee for many years. We will all miss him and the years of service he provided to our community. Our condolences go out to Dolores and the family at this difficult time.

Services for Eugene will be on Saturday, April 5 at the Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Honoka`a. Visitation will be from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m., with services at 10:00 a.m. A lunch will follow at the Ramos ranch house at the top of Kukuipapa Rd. in Pa`auilo Mauka.

No Name Road Clean-Up a Success!
We are very pleased to announce a successful clean-up of the access road near mile marker 41. We are proud to say volunteers from the Pa`auilo Mauka Kalopa Community Association with help from Dominic Yagong, his staff and family, took part in the huge effort on March 8th. And thanks to Lorraine from Dominic's staff who provided chili and rice for all the volunteers. We used weed whackers, chainsaws, loppers, sickles and lots of sweat and muscle, to cut and remove tall grass, weeds, iron woods, and bags and bags of garbage.

The next time you drive this road, take a look, and give some credit and a big Mahalo to all of those who participated. Also, please, please, please think twice about discarding your rubbish on any of our roads and highways. Maybe it's time to tell your neighbor this is not right. We all live in this beautiful area, so let's try to respect the land, the roads, the gulches, the mountains and the sea. Why should anyone be responsible for picking up someone else's garbage?

I am proud to be a member of a community association that takes action and has accomplished many worthwhile projects, and continues to do so. If you are interested in the next road clean up, or want to be involved in the PMKCA, you are more than welcome to contact us, or attend a meeting. We can put you on our mailing list for our newsletter, or you can visit our website at pmkca.org.

Report on the Sand Gulch Clean-Up
The Sand Gulch Clean-Up was a great success. Five Waikaalulu Road residents gathered at the bridge Friday, March 21, with the intention to clean up the garbage under and around the bridge.

We were stunned to find so much litter-- cans, bottles, plastic bags, Styrofoam and plastic fast food containers, an entire bag of garbage, a plastic cooler, a dismantled street sign, a 5-gallon bucket, Christmas tree lights, and a baby stroller. There was a nametag and phone number attached to the child's stroller; we will be giving the owner a call. We also found pig and cow bones, as well as rotting pig carcass. The stench made some of our work challenging.

That said, it was still wonderful to climb down the makai side of the gulch. What a beautiful and dramatic place! We used a combination of ropes, which were tied to the bridge, a strap, and good teamwork to steadily lower three of us into the bottommost part of the area. The same system enabled our group to pull the garbage (and us!) back out.

Our findings were separated into recyclable and non-recyclable heaps and taken to the Honoka'a transfer station.

The camaraderie was good and spirits were high as we looked back down into the newly cleaned Sand Gulch. To top off our two-hour work party, a handsome 'Io visited, lifting and circling over the bridge.

The next time you drive through Sand Gulch, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the area. Let's bring more awareness to this special, fragile place by encouraging folks to take their trash to the proper place and to handle dead animals in a respectful, ecologically sensitive manner.

A big mahalo to Karl Backus, Tom and Susie Walzack, and Buzz Hollander for your time, energy and good work.
