President's Message
I know that the question of what is going on with the by pass is on many of your minds. I do not have all of the answers but our Councilman Dominic Yagong has informed me that the County is working on redesigning the entrance and exit of the project. Then the alignment of the road and then the appraisal when these things are done and the land owners accept the proposal construction will commence. We are grateful that we can look forward to a safe environment when a storm or disaster occurs. Thank you Dominic for the information (see below for more).

I still hear of a few speeding cars on our roads. Our roads were built many years ago with little improvements done to widen them. May we be mindful of the choice we made when we chose to live in this beautiful mountain the roads were narrow before you moved in. Be thankful they are paved--in most cases many of them were gravel when I moved into this area. I realize many of the turns are sharp so we need to use our skills to go around them safely. We need to be neighborly and think of the other person while driving. It may be your mom or child in the other car.

At our last board meeting, Mary Souza brought some information about disaster plans and talked to us about getting started with a plan for our community. This will take some time to accomplish, but if we work together, we can do it. We need your input and dedication to help our neighbors when tragedy and disaster strike our families and property. We need input on floods, fire and earthquakes. You may call Mary at 776-1654 or any of the board members. We look forward to working with you to help in time of an emergency.

We have some Neighborhood Watch signs available for those that want one. These signs are posted near homes to let others know that we are watching out for each other. If you want a sign, call Jim Millar at 776-1618.

A special THANK YOU to John Lindelow who has volunteered to set up a website and donated a year of web membership for our association. This will make keeping in touch so much easier. Also, a special THANK YOU to Michelle Suber, who has been facilitating the e-newsletter that we receive. As a paid member of the Paauilo Mauka Kalopa Community Association you are entitled to this service. You may call Dianne Higgins at 775-7311 for an application or send a note with name address telephone number and $10.00 per family to P. O. Box 408 Paauilo, Hi. 96776. I encourage you to get involved.

Our roads clean up will happen on April 29, 2007 from 8:00 to 10:00 am. Our Road Chairman is Jamie Reno. See the related article. We need all of your to help keep our community safe and clean. We plan to meet at 10:00 after we are done to talk story and have a snack at the Vanilla Company... This is a good time to evaluate our success and ask what we can do to keep rubbish off the side of our roads maybe we will never have to do it again. What wishful thinking.

PLEASE KNOW THAT WE NEED YOU.

Aloha

A Message from Councilman Dominic Yagong regarding Sand Gulch Bypass Road

Aloha Friends,

I just thought I'd drop a short note regarding the Kalopa Sand Gulch Bypass Road Project. As you all know, a land manager (Alan Inouye) was hired by the County and is basically moving the project through the process. In speaking with Alan, he gave me the following update.

        1. They are in the process of redesigning the entrance and exit of the project (At the Moore's property at the top, and the Bishop property at the bottom of Mamalahoa Highway). There are some radius concerns, and it is being addressed in the redesign phase. Inaba Engineering is handling the redesign.

        2. Once the redesign is completed, Inouye will stake out the alignment on the roadway for the property and invite property owners to view and complete inspection. At this inspection, the appraiser and road engineer will also be present.

        3. The Appraisal will take place during this inspection, and it is expected to take approximately 4 weeks to present numbers to the County and property owners. At that point an offer will be made to the land owners.

        4. Once that is taken care of, fencing of the property will take place that would allow the road to be completed, and yet keep cattle to one side of the property to eliminate transporting of animals.

We will have a time line on construction, once the appraisal is agreed upon and we are given the green light to proceed with construction. I will keep on top of project, and share information as it becomes available. Please call me if you have any questions, and help spread the word to those that might have email access.

Aloha - Dominic
