Bypass Road

The Bypass Road is the common name of a new road that will connect Kalopa Road near Highway 19 with the bottom of Hoo Kahua Road. The Bypass Road has been in the planning stages for many years, but it looks like it might actually get built in 2008.

The main advantage of the Bypass Road is that it allows residents of the Paauilo-Mauka area to avoid utilizing "Sand Gulch" road, the one lane, dangerous road through Kalopa Gulch. The Sand Gulch road was damaged in the 2006 Earthquake and residents were forced for months to do a long commute through Pa'auilo to get to Honokaa and other points.

At the January 29, 2008 Annual Meeting of the PMKCA, Hamakua District Councilman Dominic Yagong gave an update on the progress of the Bypass Road. Money has been allocated and all is set to go on that end. An appraisal and negotiations with the landowners should be complete soon, and construction could start by June 2008. We'll see ...
